How do you and your people recharge your batteries?<\/p>\n<p>I was so thrilled to find a jar \u00a0of Nutella lurking in the fridge\u00a0<em>(honest<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<em>it was nearly empty when I found it!!!).\u00a0<\/em>It wasn\u2019t until I finished it, that I stopped to reflect and ask myself:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cwhy on earth did I think that was a good thing to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Homeworking and poor posture had resulted in sciatica, I had spent 6 weeks standing up throughout all of my working days. I wasn\u2019t able to exercise, or go for a walk with my husband in the evenings.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t enjoy the simple things in life, including sitting down.\u00a0 I was exhausted.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a weird, weird world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo far, so good, thank goodness. How about you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These are my usual responses when I am asked how I am, how I am coping with Covid.<\/p>\n<p>I realise in writing this, that my responses are part of my coping techniques, my \u201c<em>resilience mask<\/em>\u201d that I wear to protect me from the realities of our weird, weird world.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, we do so many things unconsciously, without much, if any thought. Many of our habits are unconscious responses to what is happening around us.<\/p>\n<p>So before daylight shrinks and blackout descends, take time to press your pause button, to consciously identify the habits and techniques that help you through each day. Capture your answers to the following question:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>When the going gets tough, how do I cope? How do I respond to remain energised and productive?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>(Tip: Create your list over a week or so. Be honest with yourself, capture all your habits, the good and the not so good habits)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Reflect on your list. Using different colours, highlight the good and the not so good habits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As an example, here are some of mine:<\/p>\n<p><strong>My good habits:\u00a0<\/strong>sleeping well; waking energised and raring to go; working on the big important topics first while my energy is high; taking breaks, going for a walk; doing my back exercises; singing \u2013 loudly; \u00a0looking at photos that bring me joy; client\/volunteer work to achieve a positive difference; speaking to and connecting with people, eating healthy food\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>My not so good habits<\/strong>: broken sleep; eating lots of chocolate; eating when not hungry; listening\/reading too much bad news; avoidance, taking too long to start something that has to be completed; withdrawing; working long hours; concern about Covid and its impact \u2026..<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Your good<strong>, helpful habits<\/strong>\u00a0are those that help you recharge your batteries and build your resilience. These are the habits to continue to consciously recognise and add to your list throughout blackout. This is the list you reach for when the going gets tough.<\/li>\n<li>Your not so good,\u00a0<strong>unhelpful habits<\/strong>\u00a0are your warning signals. Too many of these in one day and your resilience disappears fast. Be aware, be alert, grab your list of helpful habits and quickly re-charge your batteries by doing one of them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So when you find me singing loudly, you know I am polishing my \u201cresilience mask\u201d to boost my positive energy and productivity.\u00a0 I am lucky, I have developed these habits over the years.\u00a0 I also know to give myself permission to remove my mask. To let go and wallow when needed, in the knowledge that I can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC7p8IoEl2O8f7xbSKWNAb6Q?app=desktop\">manage my resilience<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<em>(view our 2 minute resilience video).<\/em>\u00a0I can bounce back and take back control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focus your energy on what you\u00a0<strong>can control<\/strong>\u00a0to consciously manage your resilience.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid wasting time and energy on what on\u00a0<strong>what you can\u2019t control<\/strong>, you are adding to your stress levels, reducing your resilience as a result.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Share this with your team<\/strong>\u00a0to start these conversations. Build on these conversations so that you can recognise your own warning signals and those of others. Your warning signals sometimes need to be held up in your mirror by others for you to see.
