The natural way to change \u2013 become more of who you are<\/strong><\/p>\n

A professional coach will interrupt your story, but not your thinking.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because coaching is a partnership between the coach and you, the thinker, with the aim being to explore new thinking.<\/p>\n

New thinking is necessary to get somewhere new. It prompts new actions and new results.<\/p>\n

If your thinking stays the same then so will your actions, and your results.<\/p>\n

Change the story<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a professional coach, I can tell when your thinking is old thinking.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re telling me your old story, going over familiar history and detail.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve mastered the topic. You know it inside out.<\/p>\n

You can sum it up in two or three sentences, or unpack it in a three-hour lecture.<\/p>\n

Your story might be accurate but it\u2019s still a story, a narrative you wove to make sense of your situation.<\/p>\n

We all do this, and it\u2019s necessary and fine, but there\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n

Your story sets limits to what is possible based on an interpretation of the facts \u2013 an interpretation that is, by the nature of things, outdated.<\/p>\n

Outdated because the world moves on, and the world includes you.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean to be rude<\/strong><\/p>\n

To facilitate your new thinking, with your agreement, I will interrupt your story.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll never interrupt your new thinking, though.<\/p>\n

I can tell when your thinking is new, because you start questioning your old story and putting together a new one.<\/p>\n

I will support you in that and challenge you to sustain it.<\/p>\n

How best to bring about the natural way to change?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Change happens naturally when we become more of who we are, rather than when we try to behave differently.<\/p>\n

Those who focus on your behaviour may be trying to get you to be different and both of us know you\u2019re going to resist that!<\/p>\n

How do you become \u201cmore of who you are\u201d?<\/p>\n

A good place to start is to become aware of what is happening in you, in the moment.<\/p>\n

I believe most people come to work to do a great job, and that they have huge potential.<\/p>\n

But stuff gets in their way. It might be systems that disadvantage them, office politics, or personal circumstances.<\/p>\n

Managers tend to see this as a \u201cperformance\u201d issue, and conclude that Bill can\u2019t do his job.<\/p>\n

They reach for a \u201cperformance management\u201d response, which I feel is the wrong place to start.<\/p>\n

Gaining a sense of control is a big motivator<\/strong><\/p>\n

A coach starts with Bill\u2019s potential and helps him to be aware of that potential, and aware of the barriers to fulfilling it.<\/p>\n

Once aware, the next step is to take responsibility for doing something about it.<\/p>\n

When people become aware and take responsibility, they gain a greater sense of control.<\/p>\n

That is a powerful motivator to change the story \u2013 to think differently, act differently, and move forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are all looking down\u201d was all that was needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here is a little example of what happens when self-awareness kicks in.<\/p>\n

In an early Zoom session with a leadership team, I noticed the team members were all looking down or looking away as the discussion proceeded.<\/p>\n

The energy was low, and draining away.<\/p>\n

My coaching was simple: \u201cI notice you\u2019re all looking down,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Each immediately looked up to their webcam. Real eye contact on Zoom is a challenge, but at least now they were presenting themselves as listening and engaged. The dynamic changed.<\/p>\n

That team is now operating permanently at a higher level and the members are changing the dynamic in other Zoom meetings.<\/p>\n

They have become more of who they are: engaged and connected with their fellow team members and inspiring agents of change for others. It’s the natural way to change.<\/p>\n
