{"id":4239,"date":"2018-10-04T13:38:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T12:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trustedcoachdirectory.com\/?p=4239"},"modified":"2022-02-17T11:32:40","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T11:32:40","slug":"the-power-of-dialogue-in-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trustedcoachdirectory.com\/the-power-of-dialogue-in-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Dialogue in Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Power of Dialogue in Coaching<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Corbel',sans-serif;\">Have you ever been in the situation where someone said something that made you so angry that you reacted defensively?\u00a0 I have.\u00a0 It is usually when I feel that either I am or someone close to me is being criticised unfairly\u2026in my opinion.\u00a0 My reaction is to defend, often by pointing out faults I see in the person who is stating their opinion.\u00a0 Not the best way to behave on my part.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Corbel',sans-serif;\">It is important that coaches do not allow this occasion to arise in coaching.\u00a0 In a coaching relationship the whole orientation of the coach is to be there for and with the coachee in an authentic way.\u00a0 This means that the coach is fully present, \u2018in the moment\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 Good coaches are attuned to listen, observe and feel what is happening in the client, in themselves and between them.\u00a0 Being alert to gestures, words, body language, tone and pitch that the coachee is using.\u00a0 Coaches bring these to his\/her awareness as a means to explore for meaning.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Curiosity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Corbel',sans-serif;\">I believe that the role of coach is to be open and curious to explore and learn and to help the coachee do the same.\u00a0\u00a0 When coaches are truly present they do not worry about whether they are adding value to the client or what tool to use or experiment to conduct.\u00a0\u00a0 They allow themselves to \u2018be\u2019 and allow the \u2018right\u2019 intervention to emerge from what is happening between the in that moment be it a metaphor that springs to mind or sharing a visceral experience that the coach is experiencing having i.e. coach and coachee dance together in the moment.\u00a0 \u00a0It is <a href=\"https:\/\/coachfederation.org\/blog\/gift-coaching-presence\">widely<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.coachfederation.org\/MediaStream\/PartialView?documentId=2951\">recognised<\/a> that when coaches let go in this way the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalyst14.co.uk\/blog\/what-develops-your-presence-as-a-coach\">most powerful<\/a> insights and learning are derived.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Flow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: 'Corbel',sans-serif;\">To my mind, this state of flow, where the coach and coachee dance synchronously, is analogous to the process of dialogue.\u00a0 Dialogue is a much used word that I find mostly means to engage in an open discussion between two or more parties.\u00a0 I believe this type of conversation is important and often leads to greater understanding of the various positions and perspectives that are \u2018in the room\u2019.\u00a0 What I am referring to is the definition of dialogue espoused by David Bohm.\u00a0 He reminds us that the root of dialogue comes from Greek; <i>logos<\/i> means \u2018the word\u2019 and <i>dia<\/i> means through.\u00a0 So a dialogue can be within one person or amongst many.\u00a0 Bohm talks about a <i>\u201cstream of meaning flowing among and through us and between us.
