{"id":10803,"date":"2022-07-13T09:00:28","date_gmt":"2022-07-13T08:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trustedcoachdirectory.com\/?p=10803"},"modified":"2022-07-13T09:54:54","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T08:54:54","slug":"holding-your-ground-without-losing-your-rag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trustedcoachdirectory.com\/holding-your-ground-without-losing-your-rag\/","title":{"rendered":"Holding your ground without losing your rag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>However senior you are in an organisation there will be times when you find yourself in conversations with others who are critical of you or your staff or want you to make changes you\u2019re unhappy about.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the approaches I discuss with coachees who are facing these challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take deep breaths and stay calm, courteous and controlled. Even if your heart is racing you can ensure that your body language appears open and relaxed<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t apologise for something you\u2019re not sure about, or be over-defensive. Calmly offer to find out more about a situation and agree to feed back your findings when you know more<\/li>\n<li>Never be tempted to throw individuals to the dogs. If your staff have done something wrong, you need to accept responsibility for what\u2019s happened and for sorting it out<\/li>\n<li>Listen to what\u2019s being said, acknowledge other perspectives but stick to a consistent response (often called \u2018the broken record technique\u2019) e.g. \u2018I hear what you say \u2013 but as I said before this may be working for your team but at the moment it isn\u2019t right for mine \u2018<\/li>\n<li>Showing that you <strong>feel<\/strong> anger can be OK when something is seriously inappropriate or unjust \u2013 but make sure you have your behaviour fully under control<\/li>\n<li>Negotiate wherever possible and agree to disagree, if necessary. Say something like: \u2018I acknowledge your point of view but from where I\u2019m standing this isn\u2019t a problem &#8230; but we can always keep it under review \u2019<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t make enemies by always needing to \u2018win\u2019 an argument. Be big enough to admit a mistake or change your mind if you are presented with sufficiently persuasive evidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In any situation it takes two to create a conflict. If you refuse to lose your cool, then you are\u00a0\u00a0 preventing differing points of view from turning into heated arguments.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/trustedcoachdirectory.com\/coach\/leadership-coach--leeds-halifax-manchester--henrietta-bond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henrietta Bond<\/a> is an experienced coach and communications specialist.
